Flemington Market

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday there are markets in Sydney called Flemington Markets, I assume so because they are held in the Flemington area. That may sound obvious but when we settled into our home a few people said to us You should go to the Flemington Market, like the ones in the UK or words to that effect. We do have markets sure, but not called Flemington Markets unless you are in an area called Flemington which has a market. Anyway, I’m not sure what is held on the Friday night, I think maybe clothes etc. but on a Saturday there is a farmer’s market where fruit and veg is sold for cheap and in bulk and on Sundays the market is more like a car boot sale, or a cheap knock-off/off-the-back-of-a-van market so there is a wide variety of electrical goods and clothes and so on at discount prices. As our nearest station is Burwood, we wandered down there on Sunday morning and caught a train heading West which after ten minutes or so dropped us off in Flemington. We followed the crowd of people (well, not exactly a crowd but a small gathering) and headed towards the markets.

The markets are housed in a large warehouse complex and inside were numerous tables filled with all sorts of goods; from high-vis safety clothing to DVD players. The crowd was fairly mixed too, loads of different nationalities haggling in a variey of languages which made for an interesting trip. It was a nice afternoon and we picked up a little trinket at a bargain price – a good few dollars off retail value – before heading back home. We spent around an hour and a half walking around looking at the wares on offer but we didn’t need anything and we just fancied a trip out of the house to be honest. So it made us feel a bit like a retired couple heading to the weekly car boot sale looking for a bargain! Nevertheless, we had a nice afternoon and made good use of our weekly transport pass.
