Chilling at Elizabeth Bay & Rushcutter Bay

Today was a chilled day. We woke up a little tired from our walking yesterday (we had been out walking from 10:30 until 20:00 ish) and decided that, “hey, we’re on holiday”, let’s have a relaxing day. We referred to our map and saw that we were near to two bays (Elizabeth Bay and Rushcutter’s Bay) and decided to (Nicola) Amble(r) on down. The walk was only 15 minutes or so and it took us past some luxurious properties, with swimming pools, terraced bars and gated mansions. You only have to turn one corner and you go from bohemian and sometimes seedy to affluent and exclusive. We spotted a nice patch of green and parked ourselves on our backsides in the sun and spent hours doing absolutely nothing…bliss.

Well, nothing is an exaggeration. We spent some time formulating a rough plan of where we were going to head in Australia (we had only booked 5 days in Sydney and were now on day 4). The rough plan we created was something like…after Sydney head to Melbourne (pre booked flight), spend a week or so there then hire a campervan and travel along the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide (taking 4 – 8 days in the process). We thought we’d look around Adelaide for a day or two then look for farm work (in order to extend our visas from one year to two we have to complete three months farm work) up until Christmas when we would be heading back to Sydney.

After a few more hours of chilling (we seriously took it easy today) we spotted a launderette and rushed back to our hotel and grabbed as many dirty things as possible (my dirty things consisted of what was in the top of my bag – leaving, to Nicola’s frustration, quite a lot of dirty clothes ie. all my socks). We dropped our stuff off and headed back to Elizabeth Bay park area to chill for an hour while our clothes were washed and dried. It was a satisfying feeling when we received our clothes back, clean and smelling fresh…unlike our experience in Thailand when our clothes came back dirtier than we left them (in fairness, they were dirtier but they had been pressed and folded neatly).

I had been persuading Nicola to try what was supposedly a famous Sydney meal, Harry’s CafĂ© De Wheels, which was located in Woolloomooloo Wharf (say Wool – Loo – Moo – Loo, we saw a sign with pictures of cows, sheep and toilets for the respective sections which helped, and made me giggle) near our hotel. Nicola relented, and boy was she glad she did. The pie went something like this…pie base (mine was beef, listed as the “tiger” option on menu, Nicola’s was veggie, listed as the “veggie tiger” option), on top of the pie (not alongside it on a plate, ON TOP of it) was mash potato (how we had missed mash), on top of that was were mushy pies and a bowl was formed on top by pushing a ladle into the peas and mash where gravy was poured…delicious, delicious, delicious. And all for $6 each!

We were fed, watered and relaxed to the point of coma so we walked, very slowly and contentedly, back to our hotel for a not very well earned rest.
