We caught another sleeper train but this time from Bangkok to Surat Thani, and then we caught a bus to Khao Sok National Park...well that was the original itinerary. Whilst on the train we were asked if we fancied going to see a local lake, we were shown pictures and we thought yeah why not. In the morning, after we had a not so great sleep on the train we were told that the lake visit would cost 950baht each (£20). That may not sound like much, but put it in perspective, that was the most expensive optional activity on the whole tour (even a day snorkeling on Koh Tao cost less). Also, if we had paid that each, then it would have left us with £40 to last the rest of the trip (so basically, it would have left us with 950baht each). We were not sure how it would cost 950 baht each given that the entrance fee to the park was 200baht each, there was one hour of kayaking and a ride on a boat.
Nicola and I were not amused, as it seemed that there were a lot of optional activities that were not included on our itinerary. Also, we were originally advised that, as we were the only two not wanting to go on the lake tour that we would have to wait 3 1/2 hours by the bus whilst the others went to the lake. Naturally I said no, we were not going to wait 3 1/2 hours because the trip was optional and we had paid to go from the train station to the resort. We hung around an extra 30 minutes at the breakfast stop and we jumped in a minivan that Sek arranged to take us to the resort. Along the way we even picked up a traveling nun.
Anyway, after 1 1/2 hours in the minivan, we got to or resort. The Khao Sok Rain forest resort. As Nicola and I were the first to arrive we were led to the end cabin of a line of 10. To say we were impressed was an understatement. So far, we had slept in 3* hotels, sleeper trains and jungle huts. We had our own private cabin, with a shower that had stepping stones and pebbles on the floor and two verandas, one overlooking the river that an down from the mountain. It was so picturesque and relaxing that Nicola and I decided not to spend the afternoon walking through the national park and instead indulge ourselves with an afternoon of reading, puzzles and cuddles. I'm not sure the pictures do the place justice, but it was spectacular.
