Koh Samui

We had heard that Koh Samui was a party island and expected to arrive in a busy port with touts flogging nights out and diving expeditions, we were pleasantly surprised to find a chilled out port with few people about. Nicola and I were the sensible ones, and when the offer came up to either ride in the back of a van with 10 other people, or ride in an air conditioned jeep as a party of three, we naturally jumped at the latter. We shared our ride with Alastair, a Kiwi, and naturally he and I began chatting about the love affair both nations have with rugby. After 30 minutes or so he showed me one of the best photos I have ever seen...him drinking out if the Rugby World Cup trophy. I couldn't even begin to hide my jealousy...and respect. We both apologised to Nicola after the ride for boring her to death with our incessant rugby chat...

As it was one of the group's birthdays (Jonathon, a Policeman from the Rhondda area) we had chipped in for a cake and planned to have a meal to celebrate. Before hand though, Sek played a little prank on him. He had arranged with reception to stage a phone call from the police that outlined that an unknown substance had been picked up on the scanner in one of the bags (his blue bag) at the ferry port. Sek opened the front pocket of John's bag and pulled out a package containing what looked like drugs (it was crushed tobacco but at the time it looked illegal) to everyone, especially John's, surprise. His face was a picture, I guess what flashed through his mind was images of Bangkok's infamous prison - the Bangkok Hilton. It was brilliant, but to everyone's relief Sek said it was a joke and pulled out a birthday cake and we all lived happily ever after...on a side note, read "The Damage Done" by Warren Fellowes for a "why you should not smuggle drugs through Thailand" guide.

We went for group meal to celebrate John's birthday then Nicola and I (accompanied by Sarah, Julie and Louisa, three German girls on our trip) went for a night time stroll on the beach where we looked at the stars and dipped our feet in the sea, it was lovely....aaaawwwww, romantic.

We rose early the next day to make the most of our only full day on Koh Samui and Nicola and I headed straight to the beach. It was beautiful. It was like being on a bounty advert, the sand was white, the sea was warm and clear, and the sky was perfectly blue; bliss.

Despite applying sun tan lotion responsibly (at least every 30 - 45 mins) we both burnt. Obviously me more than Nic, who went brown all over straight away but did suffer bad burns to her back and legs, I looked like a fried prawn and didn't go lovely and brown.

At midday we went back to our hotel as the effects of the sun were starting to take its toll and Nicola and I effectively dunked ourselves into moisturiser/after sun and lounged by the pool feeling sorry for ourselves. On a plus side though, I finished reading "The Kite Runner", a brilliant book by Khaled Hosseini.

That evening we went for ANOTHER group meal but due to the effects of our sun burn we did not stay long. But as we had met up with Simone (she had been on the first leg of our tour and then met back up with us on Koh Samui before she went home) we went for a drink at a beach side bar where we saw a fire show. Unfortunately, as we were there for the early show, it was only a BIG show, and not a BIGGER or HUGE fire show as advertised later in the evening... but it was still impressive.
